Timex Watches
When you need a reliable watch, why not consider one that has been smashed by jackhammers, washed in dishwashers and strapped to divers plummeting of cliffs in Acapulco. That watch? A Timex! The brand is a descendent of several important American watch and clock makers, The Waterbury Clock Company (founded in 1857) and its sister company, Waterbury Watch (which produced the first inexpensive mechanical pocket watch in 1880). When the first Timex launched in 1950, it used a new movement that replaced jewels with bearings, making it more affordable and more durable than Swiss watches. By 1956, sales of the Timex, a watch that "takes a licking and keeps on ticking," surpassed the five million mark.
This brand is known for its durability, partly due to its simple design and fewer parts than other watches. But Timex doesn't just sell simple, low-cost watches: It has expanded into the growing tech market with watches capable of paging or downloading data. Popular styles include:
-An Indiglo nightlight watch, which in 1993 was named one of the best products of the year by Business Week and Fortune magazines.
-The Data Link system, which carries scheduling, phone numbers and other information.
-The Turn and Pull, an analog alarm watch.
-The new Beepwear wristwatch.
